Africa Code week

In collaboration with Pwani Teknowgalz and Africa Code Week, we are bring to life the #AfriCAN Code Challenge 2021(#ACC2021).  

In this challenge the students  create solutions for the Africa pressing challenges using Scratch Programming language.

In the past, we trained students and teachers(Africa Code Week 2019) to participate in the Africa Code Week. 

In 2020, our students Amos Migwi Kangethe and Austin Agaba Magu emerged winners in the #ACC2020 representing Kenya in the Pan- African Stage.

do.your:bit challenge

do your :bit is a global micro:bit challenge for 8 – 18 year olds. It tests students’ imagination and combines creativity and technology to come up with solutions for the Global Goals by tackling the issues we’re facing today. 

The focus is to come up with innovations that make the world a better place and students could win some amazing micro:bit prizes with your ideas!

STEAMLabs Africa was identified as Kenya’s delivery partner bringing do your :bit to life for teachers and young people across the world through workshops, online content and training.

To boost entries to the competition, we run the STEAM Competition 2021, the first ever event of this nature. It encourages students across Kenya to develop projects using Micro:bit kits.

Course 1: Gaming for SDGs using Minecraft

Come play, build and learn….We will explore how young students can play and create solutions for the world pressing challenges using Minecraft in Education.

Course 2: Adventures in 3D Modelling:CAD skills for Kids

This course is a great starting point for kids with +10 years of age who are interested in art and design. This course brings new insight to design and architecture for kids by teaching them the basic techniques and tools of the Thinkercad platform. By taking the beginner self 3d designing course, children will be able to work with the Tinkercad’s tools, create simple objects, control the camera, resize the objects, and learn many other techniques to design in this platform.

Course 4: Scratch Your Holiday and Gain Coding Skills!

Course Overview

In this course students learn essential concepts and terminology of coding, apply coding concepts as they learn to use a block-based coding language (Scratch). They will create and remix simple projects with Scratch. Finally they will develop an idea, plan/decompose essential steps, and code a Scratch project independently.

Make games, music, animation and stories using Scratch.

Course 5: Introduction to Python and Artificial Intelligence

Course Overview

Artificial Intelligence and automation are expected to replace nearly half of all jobs that

are currently done by 16-24-year-olds. Get ahead of this trend by learning how the

machines that will do those jobs work!

At the beginning of the week, students will get a chance to explore the world of

artificial intelligence and machine learning, understanding how it affects our lives today

and how it can be used for projects. Students also learn the basics of coding in Python.

By the end of the week, students will have learned the foundations of programming and

training machine learning models, image recognizers, and practiced coding fundamentals.

Age: 12+ years

Course 1: Gaming for SDGs

Connecting the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to our daily lives in Kenya lets us make real-world connections and prepare for living in a globally interconnected world. 

 

The current COVID-19 crisis amplifies the importance of the SDGs, a practical framework to support us in conceiving a vision for our lives and our city’s future.

 

The SDGs are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and improve the lives and prospects of everyone, everywhere – now and in the future. These 17 goals were adopted by all United Nations members in 2015, as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. While these are challenging goals to achieve, progress is being made by many governments, businesses, and cities.
